Research Into Props

Research Into Props

In our short film, we are trying to construct a representation of gender and age - to do this, we have several props that we need to get in order to do this.

 Mobile Phone

The most vital props for the whole short film are the mobile phones that our characters are going to be using throughout the whole thing, as the whole concept is two people having separate conversations through text messages.

To construct gender, we could make sure that the characters have phone cases that are are stereotypical - the girl having a pink and 'feminine' case, and the boy having a masculine one.

Also to contribute to the plot of the story, we thought that we could use the phone as a platform to give hints to the end of the film, which is the boy going to pick up his dog, and the girl to her girlfriend. Because of this, we thought that the background of the boy's phone could be a picture of his dog or him with his dog, and the girl could have a picture of her with her girlfriend which the audience will assume is her best friend.

This is also a representation of age, as  it shows the different ways that teenagers communicate these days, as an adult may feel more inclined to call somebody and talk to them, but teenagers prefer use texting.

This prop will be easy to get, as everyone of our group members, as well as the actors have got a mobile phone. This means that we can easily have a phone to use. To change the background, we just need to take a few pictures and temporarily set them as the background. As for the phone cases, we can ask people that we know if we can borrow one that is suitable.

At this point in time, we are going to use the actors phones for the shoot.

Make up

One thing we want to contrast was the amount of time each gender gets ready. Because of this, we thought about having make up on set for the girl to use to show the time that teenage girls would take into their appearance.

This would contrast to the boy who would would put on a shirt, ruffle his hair, and then walk out of the house.

Moreover, seeing a girl get ready for a date by putting on make up and going through clothes is a common cliche of the romance genre, as this would be one of Barthes codes that everybody universally understands from watching romance. This will lull the audience into thinking that they know where the story is going, which will make the twist at the end more surprising.

Getting make up will be quite easy as we can ask family and friends if they have some, as it is likely that between the 3 girls in the group, and the females actors, there would be enough makeup to use. If not then we could ask our mothers, and if all else fails, we could just buy some.

At this point in time, Briony has said that she will let us use her make up, which she will bring to Sam's house.

Towel and Hair Dryer

We wanted to have our character walking out with wet hair to show that she had just had a shower to start her process of getting ready. Towels will be a very easy thing to obtain. Later on in the sequence, we could have to character drying her hair with a hair dryer, which shows that she is putting extra effort into her appearance.

These items are stereotypicaly girly, as it's not often that you see a boy using a hair dryer. We could also enforce the ideas of it being girly, by using a pink towel of some kind.

This will contrast with the fact that we have the male character just walking out of the house and dubbing that he is ready to go outside, despite the fact that he haphazardly got ready

We can easily get these items from one of us in the group or one of the actors, as these are household objects that many people own, and they are also not that hard to travel with.

At this point in time, we are likely to get these items from Sam, as we are filming at his house so we wouldn't need to transfer anything.

Hair straightener

To emphasize the fact that this character is putting extra effort into her appearance, we are also going to have the character style her hair using a hair straightener.

Once again, this constructs a representation of teenage girls, and their rituals to get ready, and suggests the fact that she is meeting with somebody that she wants to impress with her appearance.

These items are very easy to obtain, as many people in our group will own these items, and these are easy to transfer form place to place. When using this item, we have to be careful so that we don't burn ourselves when it is in use, as it is a very hot item.

To make sure that we don't burn ourselves using this item, we will make sure that who ever owns the hair straighter is responsible for it when it is in use so it is always being monitored, and we have items like cling film and ibuprofen, and a clear route to the bathroom for running water so that we can treat the burn as effectively as possible.

At this point in time, we are likely to use Melissa's hair straighter, as she is the one who is doing research into hair, and knows what style that we want.
