There are many variations of the definition for the word audience. Audience is defined as consumers that listen, read or watches a media of text. Audience can also be affected by demographics. Demographics I hear you ask ? Well demographics are factual characteristics of a population sample. For example age, gender, race, nationality, income, disability and education. Basically a very fancy way of saying the people who are going to watch our short film.
Our target and assumed audience are between the ages of 16 and 24. We are targeting teenagers and young adults as we hope to relate and connect with our audience. We are doing this to ensure we make a short film that will be interesting for the audience as well as challenging classic stereo types. We are targeting our film to both male and female as well as other genders including trans. Our film is heavily inspired by LGBTQ community so we welcome all genders and sexuality. We are however targeting this film towards the lesbian and bisexual community. We wish to target the LGBTQ community as well as people who support it.
Social class is normally split into three simple classes. Lower class, low income. Middle class, basic income and High class who have high income. In a perfect world we would love to be able to target all of these classes. However, I highly doubt a high income family have much interest in watching a student made short film. We will be focusing on middle class. We are doing this as middle class families have the luxury of a few minutes to waste watching short films. We are also doing this as we want to target other media students in the same position as us. We are not excluding low income house holds but we are mainly focusing on middle class.
In an ideal scenario we would have our short film playing in major theatres, playing on TV, adverts all around the world, playing on every device but I highly doubt that will ever happen. A more realistic target is to show it through free viewing platforms which are easily accessible for our target audience.
We plan on using YouTube as our main viewing platform. We're doing this as YouTube is free and is the most recognisable video sharing platform. This makes it ideal as it is free for us to upload the film and also free for to be watched and shared. YouTube is also a great platform for the audience we are trying to reach. A lot of 16 to 24 year old use YouTube are there main video viewing website. We have also considered using Vimeo for similar reasons.
We've decided not to show our short film on Short of the week as we are students and cannot afford the entry free. However if there wasn't a charging fee we would happily submit our film.
