Location and Permissions - Planning - Sam McLeish

As shown in the synopsis, the sequence only features four locations; the female character's house, the train station, the inside of the train and the park.

The Train Station

The green line on the diagram is the Brighton Mainline

Due to the location that we live in (The South East), we have the luxury of using many stations that we could film at. However, as we are on the commuter line between London and Brighton, many of the stations on this line, especially the ones with the circles on the map, are extremely busy and this causes issues over permission of filming people. However, as regular users of this line, there are certain minor stations where this will not be an issue.

Southbound Platform
Balcombe is a partially unmanned station that is only served by two trains per hour and is partially manned by staff. Therefore, if we time it correctly from 2:30pm onwards, we would be disturbed by neither station staff or members of the public for an entire hour! Also, with the use of a tripod, if we placed a camera on the footbridge, we could create a timelapse of the trains going past, making it a engaging sequence for our audience.

This station choice is a lot better than Haywards Heath and Three Bridges, because they are built up stations that are way too busy to meet the needs of our sequence. Also, as Briony lives in Haywards Heath and Melissa, Chayana and Sam lives towards Crawley, this station acts as a good half way point for us to meet at and film.

The Park

Victoria Park in Haywards Heath would be a brilliant location to film in as it's both central to our shoot and a beautiful location to film in. Although it is managed by Mid Sussex District Council, we wouldn't necessarily need to obtain permission to film here as it's a public place but it may be done more as common courtesy more than anything.

When filming in public, it is quite obvious to other people what you're doing. However, it would still advise picking a location in the park that is rather secluded in comparison to where other people tend to go because then we won't get in their way, and equally they won't get into our shots.

The Bedroom

As we are filming for our target audience of a audience between 16 - 24, we have the advantage of relating our own lives to our film in the aim to appeal to a target audience. The best way that this could be done is for the bedroom is literally to film a bedroom! For example, my bedroom would be a good example of it because it has a gender neutral theme and it is credible for a female character of our age to live in it. Also, using this location comes without the worry of gaining permission as I give permission to use my room.

The inside of the Train

This would be the most complex of the filming locations as it sort of a grey area as to what permission we need to get to film. We only intend to get a few brief shots of the character staring out of the window, rather than any other characters and the train's POS. Therefore, it does seem rather pointless to ask for permission for about five seconds worth of footage where there is little way for the company to enforce this and we won't be obstructive.
