Initial Poster Research

'Dark Energy' (crystalpulse 2014)
“ 500 Years in deep hibernation, A broken down exploration vessel awakes its only Driver after a faint signal is detected. The other spaceship is shut-down carrying an unusual passenger. After being awoken a fight for survival erupts over one working ship. “

Media Language

The main focus of the poster is the woman, who we assume is the main character (protagonist) of the film. An extreme close up of her face is used to enforce the fact she is important to the story. The title is in capital letters to make it stand out. The use of spacing between letters gives it a spaced out feel, very fitting for the films genre. A tag line is also used “ he overslept the human race. She didn’t “. Billing block of information is also used underneath the title.

Representation and Narrative

The posters main focus is on the female character. This shows that she is the protagonist of the film, this will encourage females to go see the film as they want to see a heroine. However, males will also be interested in seeing the film as the female is stereotypically the sex appeal in films to gain male audiences. I believe this film is portraying females as the heroes of the story.

In Todorov’s theory female characters are portrayed as the ‘ princess ‘ . In this case Todorov’s theory is challenged as the female lead is actually the ‘ hero ‘ of the story. This is a twist on the classic tale of men taking the heroic lead. The current trend in female heroines is empowering to woman as the woman are not always seen as the love interest in the films, this again is disproving Todorov’s theory.

Genre

From the title we can tell that it is set in the sci-fi genre. The Dark Energy colours scheme is mainly purple, blue and black. Blue is associated with cold and isolation. Purple is associated with fantasy, ethereal, illusory, mystical and ominous. Black is associated with dark energy and space. These colours are all associated with the sci-fi genre. On one half of the poster her face gradually fades and reveals a galaxy in her eye and a freckling of stars across her face. This enforces the fact it’s a sci-fi film.

  1. There is some good use of terms and some theory correctly applied.
It's not clear from your comments whether this is a short film or not. I'm not familiar with it. You need to comment on whether it is conventional of either short film posters or feature length film posters. All of your application of MRANG concepts needs more detail, terms and precise example. Eg - you could say more about the facial expression of the female, her position and lighting used (terms needed). You incorrectly use Todorov - you are referring to Propp I think. Correct this.
