Evauation Question 3 by Chayana Forde

What have you learnt from audience feedback?

Our Short film

When making our film and the poster, we got audience feedback in as many areas as we could. After we did our filming, we make a video getting some feedback on our rushes from two girls aged 17, who would be in the demographic audience. Some of the feedback that we got from them said that they liked the variety of shot sizes, and the lighting was appropriate for the genre this was good feedback, as it meant that we wouldn’t have to do any re-shoots. Some of the improves that were suggested said that we should add some filters to change the colouring to make it look ‘warmer’. We took this into consideration, and added some filters to the indoor scenes when our female character is putting on some make up.

After we finished all putting the sequence together, we got feedback about to see if it made sense, and if it flowed. The feedback that we received from this said that the pacing was good, and that it all made sense. The improvements that we could have made were that some of the shots could’ve been shorter, as they lasted longer than needed. The other feedback was that some of the texts that appeared took too long to get on the screen, and some of them weren’t on there long enough to be able to be read. In reaction to this, we shorten the time it took for the text to come on, and we shorted the messages so that there was less to read.

We also got some feedback from our class when we showed all of our short films, and we were told to comment  on them. One of the comments that we got was that some of the shots seemed unnecessary and an example included some shots of our female character putting on make-up. I see where the audience may feel like these shots are unnecessary, however, we had these close up shots to show that the character was putting more effort into her appearance. This fact may not come across as well as we thought, and we could make these shots shorter to make them not seem like they linger too long.

The other feedback that we got was in regards to soundtrack. One of the things that they said was that it was repetitive. I agree, and I think that having a film with almost no dialogue was difficult because we hadn't put much thought into what sound we would have to replace the silence. To remedy this, we found another song to play in the second half of the short film. The other thing we could have done was only have the soundtrack at certain points and have it fade out.

The other thing that they said was that the music got quiet at unnecessary times. This was done in post editing because it felt like some of the foley's would have been swallowed up by the non-diegetic sound, and you wouldn't be able to hear them. It also was to break up the song that was playing constantly. However I understand if doing this was distracting and brought the audience out of the immersion. To improve on this, we can change the levels so that there isn't so much of a change in the sounds.

Our Posters

The other areas we got feedback was for our posters. We got feedback on which images would look better for the poster, and what fonts looked better out of a selection. Some of our questions asked if our posters seemed to fit the genre of the film.

The feedback that we received for this said that it was very clear that our short film was a romance film, and wasn't for another genre such as horror.  They said that the things that made the poster look like a romance film were the picture of the characters and their facial expressions. Other things included the background, which was the image of the park, which I faded out and added some 'sparkles' that made it look romantic.

The feedback that I got from my friends didn't really have anything to improve on, which wasn't really helpful when I went back to tweak it. However, there were some things from a technical side that I needed to change, so I was able to change things, such as where the reviews were placed and how big some of the logos were.

Little White Lies Review

When we created the little white lies format, we did not get any audience feedback when we were creating it, as it is likely that most people had never seen the magazine before, and that wouldn't happen when the editors of 'Little White Lies' were creating the pages of the magazine. However, we created the article, Sam made a questionnaire so that people could give us feedback to see if our review mimicked the actual reviews that would be shown in 'Little White Lies'.

For the most part, the majority of people said that it was good, some people said it was perfect, and the rest said that it was neither good or bad. This meant that nobody thought that it was bad, but there was still room for improvement.
